Bayezid II | AR Akce Reference: Artuk 1477 Date: 886 AH (1481 CE) Obverse: "Sultan Bayezid son of Khan Muhammad" Reverse: "May he be victorious, struck in Edirne in the year 886" Mint: Edirne Size: 10.2 mm Weight: 0.75 grams Bayezid II was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1481 to 1512 CE. During his reign, Bayezid consolidated the Ottoman Empire and thwarted a pro-Safavid rebellion. Bayezid evacuated Sephardi Jews from Spain following the fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and the proclamation of the Alhambra Decree. He then resettled them throughout Ottoman lands, especially in Salonica. The later years of his reign were filled with internal struggle between his sons, Selim and Ahmet, over who would succeed him to the throne. With the support of the Janissaries, Selim succeeded in forcing his father to abdicate in 1512 CE. Bayezid II died shortly there after and was buried in the Bayezid Mosque in Istanbul.
